When Part of You is Still Stuck
Parts- Informed EMDR
Sometimes it can feel like different parts of you are pulling in different directions. One part may want to move forward, while another feels afraid, angry, overwhelmed, or stuck in the past. You might even find yourself thinking, “I know I’m safe now, so why do I still react this way?”
Parts-informed EMDR helps us understand these different responses with curiosity rather than judgment. Instead of trying to get rid of a part of yourself, we work to understand what that part has been trying to do for you.
When we experience overwhelming or traumatic events, different parts of us may respond in different ways. A protective part may learn to stay on guard, avoid certain situations, keep you in control, or shut down difficult emotions. Another part may carry the fear, shame, hurt, or beliefs about yourself that developed during those experiences. These responses often made sense at the time, even if they are creating difficulties in your life now. Rather than fighting against these parts, we work to understand them and help them recognize that your circumstances have changed.
Parts-informed EMDR can bring this understanding into the reprocessing work. We may work with a protective part that isn't ready to let go, a younger part that still feels vulnerable, or a part that carries a painful memory or belief. By approaching these experiences with compassion and allowing the brain to process what happened, those parts can begin to feel less stuck in the past.
The goal is not to eliminate parts of yourself or become someone different. It is to feel more connected to yourself as a whole. Over time, you may find that you have more choice in how you respond, less internal conflict, and a greater ability to recognize, “That happened then. I am here now. I survived, and I don't have to keep responding as though it is still happening.”
